Ορισμός

1. Η ανταλλαγή αερίων ανάμεσα στον οργανισμό και το περιβάλλον στο οποίο ζει.
2. Η διαδικασία της αναπνοής(δηλ. εισπνοή και εκπνοή) κατά τη διάρκεια της οποίας οι πνεύμονες γεμίζουν με αέρα μέσω της εισπνοής και το διοξείδιο του άνθρακα αποβάλλεται μέσω της εκπνοής. Η φυσιολογική ανταλλαγή του οξυγόνου με το διοξείδιο του άνθρακα στους πνεύμονες κατά τη διάρκεια της αναπνοής είναι αδύνατη, εκτός αν ο πνευμονικός ιστός αιματώνεται επαρκώς.
